Walk along Hamsun’s Footpaths
The walk along Hamsun’s Footpaths is free of charge for all children in primary and secondary education. Knut Hamsun purchased the farm Nørholm outside Grimstad in 1918, and this was where he lived with his family until his death in 1952. In 1920, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for his novel Growth of the Soil. During the Second World War, it became known that Hamsun supported the occupation forces. After the war he was thus detained at the old hospital in Grimstad whilst awaiting trial. The court in Grimstad imposed on him a fine so large that in effect he was ruined for ever. His last book On Overgrown Paths was published in 1949, and is about the period from his arrest to the Supreme Court ruling.
On this walk, pupils will explore Hamsun's Footpaths and his descriptions in the book On Overgrown Paths. Reading of Hamsun's portrayals in the book is a key aspect of the walk.
With the old hospital in Grimstad as starting point, we walk across Fløyheia to "Hamsun's" postbox in Storgaten.
The terrain is hilly, and is not suitable for the disabled. Sturdy footwear is recommended. The walk can be adapted to suit pupils with disabilities. We will then start by the old hospital in Grimstad, walk down Storgaten and stop by the library and "Hamsun's" postbox.
Duration: 1 - 1.5 hours
